A good tip given to me by a professional, was to plant tomato plants in the ground in bottomless pots. This forces the main roots downwards into the wetter ateas of the plot. I have tried it and it works. Fertilizer is added to the top of the pot where the smaller roots are.

Hi norman, I did this last year with my greenhouse toms - worked well. Also by having the rim of the pot about 3 inches above soil level it was easy to water as I just filled each pot to the brim.

Another good tip, thanks Blackthorn. No waste of water this way. I can see my tomatoes growing like mad already.

I forgot to mention, plant them in fours in a square and put a large pot in the middle and water them through that to get the water into the deep roots. The top of the pot is for fertilizer
