    Inspired by Folly Mon's thread:

    http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/non-gardening-discussion/40446-lucky-lucky-escape-me-my-life.html

I thought I'd start a new one sharing tales of lucky escapes that have something difficult to explain about them (unless it was a guardian angel/intuition etc).

    Here's one of mine.

A few years ago, I was driving home from Cornwall. In the car apart from me was my wife, my baby son, my mam and the wife's mum. We were hurtling along the M5 and I was in lane 3, overtaking a long line of relatively slow moving vehicles (I was only doing 70, I don't know why everyone else was going slower).

I'd enjoyed the holiday but now just wanted to get home. I was happy to just drive and drive for a few more hours without a break. Driving conditions were perfect. The weather was fine and dry, the road was not too busy. Then suddenly, while still in lane 3, I suddenly decided I wanted to be off this motorway right now, and certainly out of lane 3. A quick mirror, signal manoeuvre and I was in lane 1, and by chance, there was an exit slip so I took that. We found a nice family pub just off the junction, where we decided to stop for dinner. We'd only just parked up when we heard the first of the sirens, then the helicopter. More sirens. Clearly something big had happened.

It turned out there had been a horrific accident on the motorway just ahead of our position. Remembering I was in lane 3 when I suddenly had the urge to get off the motorway, and certainly out of lane 3, I later found out that an accident on the opposite side had resulted in a car jumping the central reservation and ending up in lane 3 of my side, just ahead of my position.

I had an even wierder one

several years back, I was on holiday with my family, and we spend 10 days in a remote resort which was 8-9 hrs drive away from home

had planned to leave straight after breakfast ...

the night before, the manager of the resort offered us a free lunch and insisted we should leave after lunch instead of breakfast ... had a heavy night, lots of beer, good food, darts and snooker etc and only got to bed after 2am

anyway, to cut a long story short, approx 100km from home (after driving for approx 8 hrs, I was really tired, and fell asleep while driving)

I heard a woman scream loudly and woke up .... I was travelling on the wrong side of the road and nearly crashed into the barrier ....

wife and kids were fast asleep .... was not my wife who screamed

wierd, but was very lucky, as I was driving pretty fast and luckily, there was no other traffic

I never believed that anyone could fall asllep whilst driving .... you feel tired .... and before you know it, you are snoring ....

      guardian angel or coincedence?

        Blimey,

Driving to work along the A37 one morning, i'd just about woken up enough to listen to the Radio. On switching on Virgin 1215, it was halfway thru a traffic report.

I was doing 60 coming upto the top of a hill with a crossroads. They reported an accident at the exact same crossroads, its a blind summit, I slammed the brakes on before I reached the top, there were cars all over the road.

If I hadn't have heard the report, I would have hit it at 60.

First night in Port, and being entertained by a local lady, when I popped out to get some drink and a carry out
As I walked back the husbands car had just arrived in the driveway, as the factory had closed before the night shift

Never did get my Submariners wooly pully back and they cost £60 :cry3:

Well, I've had a few "Guardian Angel" moments in my life, but the one I'm reminded of every day is this one:

Whilst in the RAF, on a posting in Aden at RAF Khormaksar, I was in a Comms Room full of chattering teleprinters trying to fix a few. The power supply was 240 DC supplied by a massive Power Station within the Camp. Anyway, since the temperature was around 120f in a very moist heavy climate and in a room full of hot machinery making it worse, I was dressed in my usual smart uniform of just Shorts and bare feet. Crossing the room there was a wire lying in the floor interconnected by a bakelite female/male plug and, not thinking, I picked it up to get it out of the way. The plug fell apart in my left hand, I can remember screaming as the electric shock went through me down the left side of my body. The thing with DC current is should you suffer a shock from it unlike AC, which will open your hand out normally, DC will close your hand and clench it around the object. I remember, even today, screaming, seeing people looking at me as though I was crazy, and seeing my left hand actually smoking!! The strange, and lucky, thing was that I found I could move my right hand and I managed to pull the plug out of my left hand. When I managed to get to the Medical Centre I found I could actually see the bone in my little finger, index finger and top of my palm because of the burning. I've just looked at my left hand and I can still see the shape of the plug burnt into my hand. I learnt from that, always wear rubber soled shoes........and always let someone else pick up the plug.:heehee:
