Help please!? My potted guava (Psidium guajava) has been flowering now for a couple of months and small fruits form but then disappear before they get to more than 2-3mm. I can't see any sign of them at the base of the plant, or any sign of snails or caterpillars. Do any of our experts know whether I'd need male and female plants to get viable fruit, or have any suggestions as to why it's happening? Thanks!

I've never tried growing the "true " Guava, but A few years ago I had a plant of Psidium cattleianum, it fruited OK, I didn't think much of the fruit so moved on.

I doubt there are male and female plants but maybe cross pollination could be the answer.

Sorry but I cant help much.:)

Thanks anyway, Pete:) P guajava supposedly has well-flavoured fruit. It'd be nice to find out:biggrin: I suspect it might be because of dropping night temperatures, but that doesn't explain why there's no trace of the little fruits....
Perhaps it'll do better with a longer summer than we've had here this year. Onward and upward!

Dont get me wrong, I like the flavour of the fruit, it was the mealy texture that put me off.

I know I'm going to regret asking, but...... Apart from Chillis, what do you put in Chilli jelly.

Red peppers, blitzed with de-seeded chillies, added to jam sugar dissolved in cider vinegar. So much for St Nigella:catapult: it's more a sauce than a jelly, but verrry good with crispy-fried beef!

Back again:biggrin: Just been trying the Chilli jelly and Garlic jam out on the members of the local gardening club. Yes, Pete, the mix is boiled and therein lies my dispute with the sainted Nigella! She says boil for 10 minutes, the jam sugar instructions say 5 minutes for high-pectin fruits or 7 mins for low-pectin. No more. The next batch, I'm going to add some lemon juice and boil for 7 mins. Then I'll cook the jelly:loll:
        Even runny, though, it's good:stirpot:
