I saw a massive bumblebee. Its December, we've hard our first frost, most of the flowers finished a while ago. Shouldn't they all be in bed by now for winter?

Yes, its such a shame. The bumblebee population is already in dangerous decline. I guess the mild weather we had up until the last few days may have confused them a bit. It is potentially catastrophic for bumblebees to get caught out because they use so much energy for flight that if they don't find food quickly they just die. There isn't much food for them at this time of year, plus like you say the cold will get any that are caught out if hunger doesn't.

She's probably gone by now, but a small bowl with some sugar would be the thing in case she happens by again.

Good idea Kedi. I might do that later just in case it comes back. It was quite sad really because it buzzed around me and checked me out for probably a couple of minutes. At one point it landed on my coat for a few seconds. It seemed confused, probably because I was wearing my big green coat and perhaps it mistook me for a tree or something:) A couple of times it took an interest in the gap between my wrist and my coat sleeve. I had to close it up with my other hand, thinking "you can't build your nest in there":)
