    1461402681y6.jpg Hi.

My first post here. I am new to gardening and bought a small gunnera in 2013. It grew and so i kept putting it in bigger pots, keeping it in the greenhouse over winter.

Spring/Summer 2015...The gunnera is too big to fit through the greenhouse door. I was unable to find a pot large enough for under £50.00 so i cut a 210 litre water butt down and planted it in there, still in the greenhouse, where it remains.

What i wanted to know please, is where is the best place to plant it in our garden?

The garden is already quite full of plants. So options are limited.

I have made a diagram of the garden and will post it, if the site allows me.

The garden slopes gently down from the house, then more steeply beyond the trellis. Ideally the gunnera needs to be between the house and the trellis.

Would it be ok, slightly shaded by the large conifer?

In the corner by the large heather/fern?.

I would put a bit of pond liner under the rootball when planting to trap water as it will thrive with plenty of water.
It will get huge and will need pruning. I use a machete on mine chopping off lumps ,potting them up, and they produce new big plants fast as long as theres a bit of root on the bit i hack off.
In winter Id leave it outdoors as they are tough. Mine survived the -20 winter in 2010 with some loft insulation then plastic sheeting placed over it.
