That looks more like a male siskin to me - though they are smaller than greenfinches. We have them occassionally, though not had one for a while.

I had a look at some images on google and they didn't look the same either but i still think it is. Reason why, it was this bird that got me into birding many years ago. Try looking in some books esp. old type ones or maybe the rspb website has some pics.

Think it is too big for a siskin JarBax, but i accept i could be wrong.

Hope someone can give a definate on this.

    cheers

I would guess at a greenfinch too but the barred wings do look like a siskin.

This is a great bird site with lots of info as well as bird calls if you have speakers. A good look at the beak will tell if it is a siskin or greenfinch. Perhaps that may help?

[IMG] Googled and got this greenfinch pic - showing the dark wings etc. if it was definitely not as small as a siskin, and had quite a large, full beak I'm veering towards greenfinch!

Would be great to see another picture!

Hi Kath, one thing i've learned with bad eyesight is that once you know, you pretty much know it for life. I'm short-sighted btw. When i first saw the greenfinch (long story) i was so amazed i got a book out and looked it up. Another long story, anyway eyesight as i say is not good, memory has gone the same way:)

Just reminded me of that first glimpse i had. Lots of people on here that are more knowledgeable. Hope you don't mind me 'butting' in.

    cheers

It looks like a weaver bird to me. We had a huge tree in our garden in SA. It had nests of hundreds of weavers, I really miss them :(

Don't think we ever get weavers in this country Tracy, if only! You must be quite bored with the birds here although saying that i love the patterns & shades of sparrows, how sad its that:)

Scotkat, weavers are so called cos of the nests they make if I recall correctly. Any progress on more pics?

    cheers
