If a plant needs to half sun or more (the description on the tag when u buy it) does this mean summer growing months or all year round ?

    sorry for the stupid questions.

I thought a half sun sign meant that the plant must be planted in semi-shade i.e not full sun?

Dim is right, the half sun symbol indicates that the plant should be grown in light shade.

What i mean is in the winter a half sun plant will get no sun because of its position in the garden, will that matter ?

According to a book I have that is written by Alan Titchmarsh, the half sun symbol means the plant 'prefers or tolerates part shade'. That description is pretty useless because if it prefers part shade, then it should be grown in part shade, but if it merely tolerates light shade then that suggests to me it would do better in full sun.

I'm going with Dim and Dai's definition. It makes more sense to me.

Incidentally, I've found so far that you should take such labels with a pinch of salt. Early this year I had strawberries growing in a hanging basket that was in permanent shade, and they even ripened.

Dave, in the winter the plant is dormant so it doesn`t matter. Don`t worry about it.

You'll find as you go along that you'll get a plant and your"gut" will tell you where to plant it rather than the label.:D:heehee:

        hi what is this plant?
i agree with all the comments below, semi shade\half sun can mean the plant is susectible to scorching in full sun. or the plant can tolerate shady conditions while perfering full sun, it is confusing.
i'd recommend looking up the actual plant in a good gardening book or the net.
