Can anyone help please,? I'm quite new to gardening but I'm improving every year! I bought some bedding pansies today to make a hanging basket with trialing lobelia. I thought they were summer ones but I've noticed that the lable says they're spring pansies following on from winter ones. Does this mean they won't last through the summer? Also are they suitable for the top of the basket or would something else be better. I'm aiming for a purple and orange theme throughout the garden this year. Also I've discovered that begonias a good for shady areas, am I too late to try growing tubers? Any advice would be much appreciated!

you can keep pansies flowering, and stop them getting leggy by trimming them back when they get a bit straggly. You won't be able to put out a hanging basket with lobelia and other bedding plants yet - not until May at the earliest, but you can certainly plant it up, and have it maturing in your greenhouse, if you have one! Pansies are fine in a hanging basket. I'm trying some different things this year, which are available from Suttons - lofos burgundy falls, and the lotus fire vine - have a look and see if they'd be good for you. They're bo th trailing. Petunias and surfin ias do that too, and don't forget the old standard of ivy!! Have a look at this for an idea - http://www.suttons-seeds.co.uk/index2.html?area=frame_menu_main.html&body=cffiles/search.cfm?cat_ca_ref=512&a=316&b=2&c=310&d=300&e=0
