Just wondering what different people use for their hanging basket liners ?

Which do people think are the best sort to use to retain water well and that looks good :)

Do you use moisture retaining gel?

I'm not convinced that the liner is key, you can get the basket properly watered OK, its how quickly the plants drink it that makes the difference I think.

I think: increase basket size, reduce the drinking rate, reduce the evaporation rate

I make my own, using moss from the lawn then line that with plastic to retain the moisture (adding a few pin prick holes for drainage) - it looks more natural than any shop bought things. Oh and that moisture retaining gel Kristen mentioned is good,

I should have said to mix it in with the compost in the bottom half of the container's compost - otherwise it works its way to the surface and the birds eat it, or it blows away, or more probably the fairies make off with it!

I didn't know that the birds like it, I can't imagine why they would go for it

I do know you've got to wet it first, don't mix it in dry because when it swells when it absorbs water and can push your plants out of the basket.

"I didn't know that the birds like it"

Well, I don't know that for sure. Last year it all swelled up to the surface, and the next morning was gone. I blamed the birds ... but could have been the stingy neighbours I suppose!

I always use the water retaining crystals with all the baskets and pots I do, along with slow release feed too. I just mix it up with the compost before putting it in each container, although I do tend to add slightly more than the packet says :)

I have today order liners called "supamoss" ..... http://www.supamoss.co.uk/

Thought I would give them a try this year and see how I get on. They seem to have good reviews although not sure if anyone here has tried them ?

Me too, plentiful supply of it and leave the excess out on the junk heap for the birds to make use of it :).

I use fibre lined with plastic and get left with the plastic when the birds have finished :lollol:

I use coco liners in the manger holders as it seems stronger to take the weight of the compost and the plants.

Well the "supamoss" arrived i ordered for the hanging basket liners and although it looks a strange material to me, its getting good reviews apparently. I did also read that it doesnt attract birds like moss or coconut liners do .... will see how it goes!

I use moss with a small pot tray or dish in it and a water gel liner disc .
I find the loose gel a bit messy.

"I find the loose gel a bit messy."

Yup, me too. I now only put it in the bottom 1/2 of the container's compost.
