Assuming you have got half-hardy plants in them (Lobellia, Fuchsias, etc.) then I put mine out on 1st June.

I will be planting them up this weekend, in the conservatory, so they can be getting ahead before then though ...

I suppose you could put them out now, but bring them indoors for the night whenever particularly chilly - they don't need light at night, of course, so just somewhere that will be 10C or a bit higher will do. Depends how much of a cigarette you think that would be!!

Hi cymro. Mine are already planted up and out ! I reckon there's no need to wait until the end of May as we wont be getting any air frost. I like to get my baskets out as soon as possible, I find it makes for more sturdy and bushy plants, and somehow they seem to grow faster. Of course, it's just my way of doing it, but it works for me. Cheers...freddy.

"we wont be getting any air frost"

Hehehe ... lend us yer Crystal Ball can yer? I need to pick my lottery numbers !

I think in addition to the frost risk, subjecting the plants to cool temperatures can check them, which in turn means that they are slower to come to their best.

But if you are in a position to get them in in extremis then they might as well be out :thumb:

(And the location of yours may well be sufficiently sheltered that they aren't troubled and are getting up a full head of steam already)

    Hi cymro,

I for one will be planting all my plants tomorrow. I've got the day off and have been hardening all my plants out of the greenhouse for 2 weeks. I never wait till end of may (well, I've only been planting from seed for 2 years but still, so not that experienced). I'm in Essex, so it's not too chilly here at night at the mo anyway. It's my son's garden birthday party on 31st May, so want the plants all out and in situ before then. Will of course be putting all 11 baskets up too ;-) Good luck with yours.

I have two baskets ready and waiting to go out, my issue isn`t the frost but the strong gusty wind that we have been experiencing up here for about two weeks, could be another week before they`re gone.

I must admit my mum helps me with the hanging baskets as I cant quite manage on my own doing them yet. Am ok doing the winter ones as only really put pansies in them and a bit of ivy so cant go wrong with them!

Summer baskets have so many different types of plants in them, I get a bit lost so hence needing my mum :)

She though point blank refuses to do them until very end of may/early june so I dont have much choice to when they go out really!!

I have though planted a large planter full of bedding plants and am today doing a couple of little pots I brought, but have been covering the large planter with fleece at night and will bring the small ones in at night.

Now if my garden was bigger I would soooooo have a greenhouse purely to do these things in :)

    Hi Cyril
You need to hang your baskets at a height you can see the plants, too high and you are just looking at the bottom ,
Feed weekly once they are going well,
Water EVERY day ,i water mine in the mornings as they dont get the sun till noon and then it s full sun until sunset,
What you really must remember is how many plants are in that small amount of soil, and they are all dependent on you for food and drink,
