I think I am getting carried away here with visions of jungles and stuff! I have been reading all about bamboos and I already have a small one although its hardly grown in 10 years  I fancy having a hardy bamboo to grow to screen out other houses and have been looking at various types on the net but i think i fancy one of the golden bamboo (phyllostachys aurea or something)Has anyone had better sucess then my poor little plant has. I am in the midlands (this version is suitable i think) and have clay soil which may be a bit of a draw back.

Hi - I am new to the site and just browsing, I have a phyllostachys nigra and a striped cane bamboo, I divided them up last spring and planted as a screen and its already starting to look very good. It is very exposed to west winds and we are in a real North Yorks frost pocket, it also did not help that my horse turned into a panda and ate the top of the mother plant.
    hope this helps

Lazy-Gardener. I know nothing about bamboo, except for the fact that some varieties are extremely invasive and some are not. So you need to put that question on your checklist.

Always remember that humans control plants not the other way round and if twice a year cut away the creeping bits YOU are in control.Remember with all of the rampant bamboos,
    The first year they sleep
    The second year they creep
    The third year they leap.
So be aware......................... [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
