Have I killed my strawberries?

My strawberry plants (growing in one of those strawberry planters) were putting out loads of runners, so I pegged them down into pots and had about 30 healthy new plants.

Two days ago I noticed tiny white roots peeping out from the bottom of these pots so I cut the runners and re-potted the plants but literally within minutes some began to wilt (not before I cut them all of course!) and, over the next 24 hours all but about 9 also wilted .. some of those don't look too happy either.

Simple question - have I killed them and what did I do wrong?

You`d be better off leaving them attached to the parent plant until the early spring.:thumb:

Shift the survivors into the shade and cover lightly with some transparent polythene this will help reduce water loss due to transpiration and give them a better chance of survival.
If I need rooted runners I peg them into pots in late June/early July and cut off the runners about six weeks later. I then leave the pots containing the rooted runners for another week or two before planting out. It could be your pots were on the small side and/or you planted out a bit too soon after snipping the runner.

Thanks Dave W. I've covered them with polythene and have my fingers crossed. It's the first time I've grown strawberries (and only then because I was given the planter). Clearly I missed that vital step between the cutting and repotting. I shall know in future so, as I say, thank you.
