Berry and barley always rolls upside down on the carpet when they play.
A week ago berry developed a heamatoma in his left ear flap, as did barley in the left ear flap, if they roll around when older this seems to happen. A blood vessel breaks and leaks inside the layers of the ear and swells up.
We didn't take them to the vet straight away because they wouldn't do anything until it's very big.
But Berry's got really bad and solid, so last Monday we took him. The vet said that he had a ear infection in that ear which was a ongoing problem. She cleaned it inside and put in a one dose of drops. Drained his ear flap by putting a needle in but he struggled too much even with three of us holding him. So the vet just squeezed the blood out. She was going to put a steroid fluid in the ear flap but he was struggling too much. She gave him a steroid injection in his body instead and got some steroid tablets. She said if it comes up in a few days then maybe operate on it, but they don't like doing that because of the recovery, one of our other dogs had the operation for that and it's not very good.
It has come up a bit but hopefully it will go down like his right one did a year ago.

On last Tuesday we took Barley to the vet for his left ear flap, he also had a infection so she did the same as Berry's. Barley's heamatoma wasn't as big so she didn't do anything, just see if it gets worse.
Now we have to stop them from rolling on the carpet until they get better and healed.

Our dogs that didn't roll about on the carpet didn't have this problem.

We would have taken them together but there's not much parking so we have to park in one of the streets.

Our other vet used to have good parking but it was far away and we didn't want to travel that far anymore.

Sorry to hear that both Berry and Barley have this ear infection. It must be nigh on impossible to keep them from rolling on the carpet. Hope both heal quickly with no firther issues. :doggieshmooze::doggieshmooze:

Thank you Victoria, the thing is that Berry had it in his right ear,got better and it shouldn't happen again, but it might happen to barley's right ear.
We know the times that they do it so we'll have to keep an eye on them.

When I was a kid our labrador used to get these, she had at least 2 operations for them.
Looking back I think she always has ear problems and head shaking was causing it.

Thanks Pete and yes they do shake their heads but not all of the time, just when they get excited. They've always done it so we didn't think that there was a problem until now, hopefully they will be better now. Once that the ears have healed they shouldn't get it again, the vet said that they could get it again if operated on.

Today had to take Berry back to the vet and have his ear flap drained again. Saw a different vet she wouldn't put any steroid in to flush it out, she said that it might cause an infection. It might come up again and it might stabilise or have a operation, which we don't want. Barley's hasn't got any worse so hopefully that will be ok.

Awww poor Berry..Just speaking from experience.. with one of my boys we tried the draining a couple of times but the it still kept filling up again so the OP was the only alternative.I hope Berrys stops filling..got everything crossed for you all:grphg:

May I ask how old Berry is ?

Yes that's ok, he'll be 10 years in march. It always happens when they are older.

Thanks @lolimac yes it's the 12th of this month. That's good that you sorted Montague's ear irritation. With berry couldn't tell from the outside that there was a infection inside from looking at it. With Barley and Berry they always go upside down and roll about, at the moment have to stop them. Barley's heamatoma seems to have stabled, Berry's has come up a bit but hopefully it will go down. Going to try to avoid a operation, last year his other ear went down by itself.

It feels like Barley's heamatoma is going down, it feels a bit wrinkly. Berry's hasn't got any worse but not going down yet.

Barley's hasn't gone down much yet, Berry's has stopped getting worse and now it's starting to go down, but very slow.
