Heather cuttings

    Hi all,

    Is it possible to propogate heather cuttings.

    I've tried but failed miserably. If so can you give me advice please how to go about it. :scratch::)

    Hi Sheal the easiest way is to either dig up the plant and then plant it deeper this will encourage rooting up each stem then you cut off with roots (September) and pot upthyen keep either in a greenhouse over winter or a coldframe

    or put loads of compost ito the middle of the plant same thing will happen each stem will root cut of September time and pot up (as above) its a very old way of propergating heather

    You could put three in a pot , this is the quickest and easiest I have found and if you have a favourite you will have lots of them

    A while since I propagated any heathers .
    I used to do them Sept/.Oct taking a cutting about 2in long and remove the small leaves off the lower half . If you only doing small numbers insert them around the edge of a 3.5in pot .about 1in deep . I use 50% peat and 50% sharp sand.Water in then cover with a polythene bag .These can go into a coldframe or cold greenhouse.Check for water periodically over the winter and they should be rooting by spring
