When we moved here 6 years ago there was already well established hedging but it has holes and nothing but bare wood in places for the first 3ft or so. It is around 8ft high in total.

Is there anything we can do to nurse it back to health? :( [IMG] Regular trimming has no effect at all.

Is there a feed we could try or a plant we can encourage to grow thru the hedge?

    Hi Paula
I'm assuming that the hedge is privet or laurel. The problem you have is that with a hedge that is so tall and well established all the new and vigorous growth will be at the top. If you try to plant anything else there it is unlikely to grow much because the hedge will have taken all the goodness from the soil.

The traditional but drastic way to solve it is to coppice the hedge. It takes some years to get it looking healthy. You need to cut sections of the hedge down to within about 6 inches of the ground. It will then sprout new stems from the bottom and because the hedge is so well established the sprouts should grow quite well. Of course this will result in gaps for some time.

Sorry I can't think of a better solution

Maybe someone else has a better idea.

    Good luck

    Hi Paula
We have a similar problem but I was the one that caused our problem I removed a very old lilac from our privet hedge which left a little "hole".

I'm looking for some nice golden privet to replace the gap but I can't find one anywhere.
If anyone knows a place where I might find some please let me know.
    Thanks Helen.xxx.
