Saturday a small hedgehog arrived quite hungry so gave it some dog food. it ate some of it and wandered around the garden, didn't mind us, foraging under leaves. By now it had a robin for company enjoying the upturned leaves. A lovely partnership everyone happy. It stayed in the garden all day. At nightfall I went out to see if He was still there but gone, good, probably to some warm leaves somewhere. My wife went out Sunday morning just for a look around and there he was in the pond dead. The pond, I thought was safe for hedgehogs, shallow areas easy to climb out ..he had tried to get out by a tall partly submerged planter thingy that created a impossible escape. Now moved. Buried it under some shrubs in the corner of the garden. Just now and again there is a bit of sadness in gardening.

We try to do everything to encourage wildlife into our gardens, and its so sad when something goes wrong, :cry3:.

I read or heard somewhere, if you see a hedgehog during the day it`s sick :dunno:

So very sad when something dies in your garden . The very place that you, quite rightly, thought was the perfect place for him.
    Not your fault though Hans,

Yes I heard that seeing a young one in the daytime is, amongst other things a shortage of food. I think that it probably was in poor shape not big enough to survive winter. A few years ago I tried to hand rear a very small one and it died also, so my record is not too good. Some go away quite full so this was just a blip. One large one lives behind my compost heaps may well be hibernating now.

That's a shame Hans ,but being small it probably would have had a job getting through the winter:sad:

Mine died last week , found him on the lawn :cry3: just one of those things I suppose.

I have buried him under the Mulberry tree

Pamdish is correct if you see them out in the daytime something not right best thing to do is put in a box in a warm place and contact a local hedgehog (helper) ? forgot what they are called we have a lovely lady in Cardiff that devotes her life to them I have spoken to her on several occasions and has always given me good advice.
