Hi, I would really appreciate anyone opinion on something I noticed in my garden. I am trying to create a nature trail around the garden and I am hoping to encourage hedgehogs to take up residence. I have made a hedgehog box, filled it with hay and covered it iwht sticks and branches. I haven't seen any hedgehogs but I have noticed some little red/pink blobs of excrement around. I have heard that hedgehog droppings are this colour. This raised my hopes but what confused me was that I saw these dropping on top of a 2 ft high fence around the pond. Does anyone know if hedgehogs climb? If so why when they could easily wriggle through the fence slats? Or could these dropping actually be from a bird? Also does anyone know of anything else I could do to encourage them to stay? Many thanks for your thoughts.

Could be from birds if they have been eating berries I suppose. Have you tried putting food out for the hedgehogs? Also they don't like a garden that is too tidy, they like to mooch around in fallen leaves and undergrowth.

hedgehog poops are an inch or 2 long, skinny, black & sausage shaped. we get them all the time here. be patient, i'm sure you'll have a prickly visitor before long

Thanks for the suggestions guys! To be honest they don't look like that, as Rusty said I think the most likely culprit are the blackbirds I see bobbing around the place. Unfortunatley I don't live at this house, it is my dad's house and is let to holiday makers for much of the year so I can't be there to put out food. I do plan to leave some dog food for the guests to put out if they want, other than that I am trying to encourage their natural food by leaving out rotting logs and piles of stones. I think I will move the box to a place where there is more leaf litter etc. Thanks again.
