I was about to ansewr, but distracted by your avatar - like it, Jjdecay! :D

You can take cuttings, but it'll be a long time before you get much privacy

I'd recommend getting young plants, whips, and planting them as close as recommended for whatever type you get. It does vary a bit. This is about the best advice on the subject, from the RHS.

I chose to plant a native species hedge, which ahs the advantage, not just that will suit the conditions, but that wildlife like it, for berries, thorns, etc. I expect there's an equivalent range of hedging plants for Germany, that won't be so very different from in the UK. Good luck!

thanks, was just what i needed.will print that, then get down the local plant shop.
i dont think there would be much difference between england and germany, the climate is basically the same, but i will ask regardless, about which type would best suit my needs.

glad you like the avatar [IMG]

When I moved into my house in November, half the front hedge had been cut down to make way for a driveway. As I don't drive, I have decided to fence one side of the garden and grow the hedge back along the front up to the gate to ensure I have privacy once again.

Back in March I planted 6 Privets (is that right?) They were about 20 cms tall. They are all now near 1 metre tall and growing really well. I have been watering them loads and putting compost around the base of them. Hopefully by autumn I will be able to lower the rest of the hedge so by next spring it is all the same height. They were cheap too - something like £3 each.

    Good luck :D

Don't forget to keep trimming, them, top, front and sides, all the way to the base, so you get plenty of thickening out of growth, GP!
