Think I really c0cked up here!

bought 2 hedichiums from ebay flavaseans and gardenerianum. first one came up and well away, but latter just looking a bit green on the node but no shoot.

I read to keep them humid by putting cling film over them - so I did a week ago. I have looked at it today and the shoot looks a right old mushy mess!

    any hope for it?

As you've probably guessed Waco, it should be racing away by now. Personally, even though I've grown them for many years, I would never buy chunks of dormant rhizome unless they were the only means of getting a particular species, variety or hybrid. Growing plants are only slightly more expensive and always mucxh easier to establish. Covering in cling film encourages bacterial rot, which spreads far more rapidly than fungal problems.

The best way of getting the pieces to start is to part-bury the rhizomes in small pots of well-drained, but moist compost, keep them in good light and be prepared to move them on as soon as they have developed a good root system. They should be kept moderately warm, but need freely moving air. There are lots of adventitious buds on the rhizome and the potential for one or several of them starting to grow is fairly high ... but you need to provide the right growing conditions first. Soggy, airless conditions won't do the trick, so get rid of that cling film.

Rhyzomes both started about 23rd June.

Yes I already got rid of the cling film, they were not under it for very long. The node was definately greening, but I would have expected it to be shooting up like the other one was, so hence took drastic action.

dave I planted it as you instructed above, but only when I was getting nowhere di I try drastic action - obviously wrong thing to do! Well you live and learn.
