How is Skye looking today @Marianne Beattie ?
Hope you get lots of enjoyment from your new garden, but your conditions will be very different from most people's on this forum, especially if you aren't in a more heavily inhabited part, so any extra info will really help with advice. Photos will also help.
Winds, in particular, will make a huge difference to what grows well. ;)

Welcome @Marianne Beattie. Good advice from fairygirl. I too live in Scotland and my garden is quite a few ft above sea level. That said it does have sheltered spots like close to the house where I can grow plants that would otherwise be burnt in the winds etc.
If you are starting a garden from scratch I would suggest the first thing you consider is some sort of hedge which will in time filter the wind and protect other plants. Not knowing exactly what your growing conditions are, I would imagine something like Beech would be a good choice, however, you could look at other gardens in your area to give you ideas of what will grow successfully.
Gardening north of the border can be a bit challenging to say the least:rolleyespink: however, if you choose the right plants for your location you can still create a lovely garden.

Yes - a shelter belt is the most important thing if it's an exposed site, and/or at any altitude.
