Just a quick hello from me :)

Having spent the last 5 years renting flats in London, I'm super excited to have just moved to an Actual House with an Actual Garden in Hertford.

It's my first 'own' garden so I can't wait to get cracking. The wendy house went with the previous owners, but we're hoping to pop a greenhouse opposite the shed and make the borders a bit deeper and a bit more shapely! The house itself is a victorian cottage, so we'll be aiming for a cottage garden. Just been choosing some fruit trees tonight :D

Thanks in advance for your advice and wisdom! This forum seems like such a huge wealth of knowledge, I can't wait to get asking stupid questions ;)

welcome - I am newish here too and know nothing about gardening. this is our first garden too but be thankful yours is in nice order to start with - I am digging out boulders (literally), roots and general jungle like areas. look forward to seeing yours develop into what you want.

    Welcome to GC :dbgrtmb:

I'm only 20 minutes from you (less than that at the speed I drive :heehee:) and you will be welcome to come to our open garden weekend - Bank Holiday weekend 28/29th May.

We open for a local charity and we have lots of plants for sale at very reasonable prices.

A group of GC members met up here last year on open day and I gave them a private tour - plus a sandwich :). More info in a week or so's time.

Here is a link to a preview I put on here a few years ago

    Thanks everyone :)

Shiney, I had a look at the thread you posted the link to- your garden is breathtaking!! I love all the aquilegia everywhere.. do they really all flower different colours and varieties, just from self-seeding? And are they long-lived in the garden? I've never planted these before, but I'm definitely going to! Any recommendations?

I'd definitely love to come to your open day, I'll wait to hear more :)

I've just bought my fruit trees- conference pear, victoria plum, cherry summer sun and apple newton wonder. So I'll have to frantically start preparing the garden for their arrival quite soon!

    Hi Heather,

Yes, they are tough as old boots and seem to stick around for ever. They seed very easily as most of them are from a less cultivated breed.

We shall have some more mature ones for sale and I can put some aside for you if you wish. We've just dug some up and shall be potting them tomorrow. The last few years they have all sold out on the first day.

Conference pears are my favourite and we have one tree that is over 60 years old. Last year was a very good year and we had over 100lbs from it :yess:
