Hello, my name is Julie. I am a 43 year old housewife with two teenage sons (13 & 16). I have joined this forum because it looked the best of all gardening forums. I enjoy pottering about in the garden, planting things at random and then not knowing how to look after them! It is for this reason that I have come on here, hopefully to gain some useful information from all you keen gardeners!

My main concern at the moment is that my beautiful, fragrant Golden Showers climbing rose has now lost its blooms and I don't know how to prune it. Do you cut above or below the new shoot? I usually do this randomly each year and hope for the best! I must have got it right last year because I have had lots of lovely blooms this year (until now when they have all dropped.) Perhaps someone would be so kind as to advise me on this. (Maybe I should have put this question in a rose thread - sorry about that.)

Anyway, I look forward to reading the many posts on here in due course. :)

Hey Julie! I used to live in Lowestoft - I rented a flat in Wellington Esplanade and worked in the local hospitals, Lowestoft, Gt Yarmouth and Gorleston Hospitals. That was about 2-3 years before the James Paget was built! Was in 1973/4

WOW what a lovely welcome from you all! :)

Hel - Great minds think alike! :thumb: It's a good climber and I particularly like the bright yellow colour and lovely fragrance. Good luck with yours.

Daisees - My late aunt, Kathleen Holland worked at the old Lowestoft hospital before James Paget was built, maybe you remember her? She was a nurse (sister I think.)

David - Thanks for that :thumb:. Now that I know for definite how to prune I have no excuse now! I will be a dab hand at pruning and hope that I get lots of blooms from it!

Once again, thanks everyone for your kind welcome :)

    Hi Julie!

Wow - 2 teenage lads !!??? I wonder you have the extra time to do the garden with a handful like that! I take my hat off to you all with children - I have enough of a job just looking after myself and murdering the odd dandelion weed now and again!

Hope you enjoy the forum and I look forward to seeing a photo of your Golden Showers when it is back in bloom again!

    Kath

Hi Kath, pleased to meet you :)

My boys are past the age when they need me I'm afraid :(

As long as there's food on the table, clean clothes and the freedom to play on their X-box and chat on MSN, they're happy! :D

I have plenty of time to garden, so that's a bonus! :thumb:

I don't know how to put photos onto the computer I'm afraid, and as the blooms are past their best now there isn't much to show :(

Hopefully my pruning will bring some more flowers on :)
