Needing some advice in coming year or so as I have decided to sort out the garden. I call it a garden but really 3/4 acre of trees and sort of lawn (will never be a bowling green) and needing to be made more picturesque, currently green mainly with some brambles. Someone did the rough work but now I want to improve it and keep it in check.

Hello (sort of) neighbour ! Welcome to GC. It would be a gamble to plant things now, unless you've got a reliable source of water and lots of time and patience :) Concentrate on getting rid of the brambles, digging out is the only approved method now, sadly, but they'll only come back to haunt you otherwise. If you're thinking along the lines of borders, lay out a rough design with hosepipe, rope or sand. Walk around it, bomb round it with the ride-on if you've got one, to see if the corners and curves are practical. Look at it from above if possible and especially from the viewpoints from the house. If you want to stay 'French', just decide where you want feature trees and shrubs in the 'lawn' and prepare really good, deep, soil-improved planting holes. Stake!!! And see above for optimum planting times. October/November is ideal unless you want to spend this spring and summer watering. If I can offer any other advice, please yell
