Hi, I'm Fran and I live on the coast in Mid to North Wales, between Barmouth and Tywyn for those of you who may know the area.

I am absolutely new to gardening but last year I created a little flower bed on the front of my cottage and filled it with wild flowers which, to my amazement grew. When they got past their best I took myself off to a nursery and found perennials in flower and stuck them in too...it seemed like a good move, I've not killed anything yet and I'm now enjoying a second year of flowers.

My next venture is a square of walled back garden probably about 35m2 which is currently a very large bed of nettles...I'm thinking Moroccan courtyard and somewhere to sit with lovely twinkly lights.

The reason I have joined this week is because I have a week off and I want to get stuck in but I'll need help...I dont think I can wing it anymore.

Shwmae Fran! :sign0016:Don't know your area but live 20 miles from Cardiff. I'm pretty new to gardening too (in my 2nd year) and this forum, everyone is really helpful and friendly here, so hope you find the answers you need :)

regards to nettles, I use a strimmer then apply round up or similar. Some come back, some don't! I pull all other weeds up by hand, no round up

Hi Lynd, diolch! I'm going to go out now and see if theres any prospect of pulling them up...if it seems like an impossible task I may just wait for the Roundup to work and spend the week visiting garden centres :)
        Hwyl!

Dim problem! If you haven't got a strimmer, a nice thick stick will do and give them a good whack so you can walk on them. Trampling on them is a good way to break them down and get less stings I find, providing your wearing boots/wellies. Don't forget heavy duty gloves, the buggers can sting through normal ones.

          Welcome Fran :)

If you have just sprayed with Roundup you need to wait a few days for the weedkiller to make its way down into the roots. It may take a couple of weeks before nettles show any signs of dying off, at this time of year they die back naturally anyway.

Thanks Guys, I sprayed last Wed so it should have had a chance to get a little way down won't it? Anyway, I've been impatient and started pulling them up...bonfire tonight :)
