    Hello!

I just bought an apple tree from Lidl, it was a bit of an impulse purchase really, anyway , I see I need a pollenator.

My garden is not really big enough for two trees, is there anything small that would work, like a quince maybe?

Also could somebody confirm that the 3 large cherry trees on the other side of the road would be no help to my apple tree?

I don't think the cherry trees will polinate your apple. How about a crab apple?

On Gardeners World a few days ago, Monty Don was planting apple trees, and talked about them being pollenated by another tree if it within 500 yards, and in flower at the same time. So if you are living in a town, it may be that a tree a couple of streets away is sufficient. So I would be tempted initially not to worry.

Basically it's a matter of if the bees can find another apple tree and get to yours with the pollen. Sorry it has to be an apple. You can't actually cross an elephant with a tiger. (Yet). If you get to Wilkinson's quickly you can get a 'patio' miniature apple which would do for pollination. I see you are in Bristol and although I don't know what area then I reckon, as Peter says, you are pretty well OK to pinch somebody else's pollen. I recently planted 2 in my garden, but I've got a big garden and like to be safe, 2 of my neighbours with only one tree each are producing fruit every year. I think you will pollinate with one.

Cheers for the advice , I live in quite a high density area (Bradley Stoke) so I will go ahead and pop the tree in and hope for the best.

Cox`s Orange Pippin partly self fertile, but does better with a pollinator. Steve if theres an apple tree in a garden near you you shouldn`t have a problem [IMG] John [IMG] :D

I have dug a hole, watched Monty on GW to see how to plant (not on because of crufts tonight :( )

Think I'll wait till Monday after the gales to plant.
