Hi, My name is Terri and my husband and I moved to France 17 months ago. We both decided to "escape" to France having spent 25-30 years in jobs we hated (mostly I.T. related) and spent so many hours travelling we were always too tired to enjoy life in our beautiful village of Wray in the Lune valley in Lancashire. We sold the house and took off to France 17 months ago. Last February we bought a 200 year old farmhouse with 11.5 hectares of land with several barns. We are currently converting a barn into a gite and depending on how the budget goes we hope to convert a second one in a year or so. I've always loved gardening but never really had the time but now I do and I love it! I'm still learning and still need lots of advice. Last year I grew vegetables for the first time and it was pretty successful (beginners luck methinks).

Hi Tweezers, and welcome to GC. You couldn't have found a nicer forum.

Your situation almosts mirrors ours, even to the point that my t'other half was in IT.

Even stranger, I have been to Wray because friends of ours lived there and then here in Portugal. It's a lovely part of the world where you were.

I'm sure you'll find lots of advice here ... enjoy!

Hello everyone, lovely to hear from you. I'm looking forward to using this Forum and hearing all your news - and picking your brains for gardening advice! I'll post a picture of my cat, Mazola, when I can work out how to do it. Sadly we lost our other cat, my beautiful little Muffin last year. She drowned in a well near the house we were renting. So unfair, we were moving out 3 days later too.

Welcome Tweezers! Aquitaine is a lovely place - if you're going to be letting your gites, you'll not be short of takers, that's for sure!

Hi Tweezers - welcome! We moved to France four years ago, near Cahors.... Where are you? Hope the soil's easier than here (heavy clay with rocks in!) That - and other things - make gardening a challenge!

Hiya, we're about midway between Limoges and Perigueux near a village called Sarrazac. I know what you mean about gardening here. Everything grows like wildfire, especially the weeds! It's quite clayey, gets waterlogged. I did my very first veg plot last year and everything grew really well, no bugs either. I've been told it'll all change this year, now they know where to find us!

We did much the same thing, but without a passport! Place names as understandable as we have. Good luck with all those hectares. atleast i've only got acres.

Yep - found it! Bit worried by the sound of your next town, though - "Angoisse"! (Hope you know what that means - it's what you get in the lumbar region from owermuch diggin!!)
    :D
We're near Lalbenque, the truffle centre. Things certainly grow fast, but often get heat stress here. Plus spraing in the spuds, "cloque" in the peaches, and runner beans that flower but don't fruit... But there are neighbours to die for, great Cahors wines, friendly, helpful people - and ahhh - the climate!! Hope you're as happy as we are. [IMG]

Yes we love it, no regrets, great friends and neighbours, great (and cheap) wines and lovely climate. Our local farmer who tends the fields and takes the hay brings us fresh eggs, local "hooch", the occasional lump of meat (something he shot....) and a huge trailor load of manure for the garden!
