My name is Paul and I am new here. I live in St. Louis, Missouri and have been gardening now for about 10 years. Although I never used to have a green thumb, I started keeping tropicals alive about 20 years and had a jingle of an apartment. Now that I live in a house, my tropical collection has swelled over 200, including mostly orchids, that go outside every year to add a bit of tropics to the mid-west.

Our soil is basically clay, but all beds were mended and now are looking good. They were mended so much we had extra clay to throw away, lol...

I will try to post a pic today of the yards and beds, although the full sun area still needs a lot of work as its just a hodge podge of things right now.

The front of the house sits kinda north, and we have a huge pin oak tree in our southern facing backyard.

Hope to learn a lot from all of you!!

    Thanks,

    Paul McMahon

Welcome to Gardeners Corner Paul. :) Although the percentage of members here are British we have a number that grow tropicals, along with those members like yourself from further afield. We look forward to seeing what you are growing, pictures are always a must here on GC.

Thank you for the welcome! I have learned from Orchid Forums that regardless where we reside, we can all still learn from one another and appreciate other perspectives and growing environments. It will be a treat to be here and listen to what everyone has to say!

Here is a quick picture walk through, from the front of the house to the backyard.

    And now the backyard:

And the Frank Lloyd Wright stylized building in the background of this one is my shade house for most of my orchid collection.

Paul, you have a lovely house and garden. No offense meant but the style is not what I imagined of St Louis. I was expecting lots of wood! :)

Absolutely no offense taken! LOL... And thank you all so much!

St. Louis was known for it's manufacturing of a reddish/orange brick which is now in high demand across the nation due to it's unusual coloration and limited supply. In the proper city of St. Louis where I live, a lot of homes were built with these bricks in an arts and crafts and/or bungalow style. You won't see craftsmanship like these homes anymore, lol... Each one is unique with it's original stone and brick work.

Well, we learn something new every day! It's an unusual and attractive design, almost 'fairy tale'. :)

Hello and welcome to GC from me too Paul. My husband was born in St Louis but grew up in Cincinnati and we met in Alabama. I just love your house, like a gingerbread fairytale abode ... oh, I see I am thinking along the same line as Sheal! ;)
