    hello peeps,

well as some of you might remember I wanted to get into gardening cause I am moving house. Well it has finally been sorted and I should HOPEFULLY be moving the end of next week.

The house has a longish north facing back garden so it gets sun at the bottom but near the house is in shade.

Can anyone give me any ideas on what the best to plant is? I want to have some lovely flowers but from what I can see, these all need full sun.

Any one else got this position garden?

    cheers

I do, Lelly, but the vast majority of the garden that has the shade is all monoblock  I do have shade from the garage though, so all that part is like your garden.

What sort of plants do you like? I have lots of cottage garden ones in that part - maybe they would suit you?

A North facing garden does not mean only ferns and hostas. I lot of plants will take shade, partial shade, - and a north facing garden is not deep shade - it just doesn't have much direct sunlight during the day. The only plants to avoid are those that need full sun. For instance my front garden which faces north east, and gets some morning sun - is planted with roses, lavender, euonymus and fuchsia to names just some.

Also please note that plants don't read labels, and its often worth trying something you like whatever the description says.

I have a north side of my garage that only get about 10 minutes of sun a day. I am happily growing Hemerocallis, Crocosmia Lucifer, Persicaria amplexicaula Firetail, Primula vialii, Lythrum salicaria Blush (lovely pink colour), Lobelia syphilitica, Lobelia Fan Rose, Dicentra spectabilis, Aquilegia, Astrantia Buckland, and Geranium Mrs Kendall Clark (thrives but only flowers for a short time - so that has to go).

Some of the plants on the link you sent me liz are gorgeous. I actually feel quite inspired now.

Peter, chuffed to see you have the dicentra spectabilis on there. I have seen that a few times and have fallen in love with it! that one will definatley be going in my garden.
