    Hi
    I'm new here.

I moved into a property in the Pennines 20 months or so ago.

Last year we had no problems with flooding at the front of the house. The garden slopes down to the house and the back garden is about 4feet lower than the house.

The soil is of a clay type and we keep getting flooding in the area between the flags by the house and the lawn. I have dug a trench about 2feet deep which fills quickly in the incessant rain we're getting at the moment. I then fill a hose pipe with tap water, disconnect it and use it to siphon the water to the back where there's no problem. I'm scared of it reaching the house one day as we have a low air brick.

I feel that there are two options :
    1. plant some large shrubs (there were some smaller ones there last year)
    2. build a soak away (or do both)

However, having just emptied the hole 25 mins ago - it's half full (or half empty depending on your point of view!)

    See below

    Thanks in advance
    Tim

Isn't a french drain just the posh name for field drain? Basically a trench back filled with stones of varying size?

Thanks for the suggestion. Just spoke to my Dad who suggested digging a pit, filling with gravel (i.e. like a 'soak away') and running a pipe from it, down the side of the house as an overflow to the back of the house. I'd have to lift a few flags and get busy with the spade but it sounds do-able.

Having watched the video - just what you've suggested. Thanks

Well now I know what a French drain is :dbgrtmb: Also the animated video accent is really weird , similar to the sea creatures in Stingray ! And do they call a lovely piece of turf a "sod " in the USA ? It really loses something calling it a sod .

                        Strange word filter
One can say sod, but can not say the three letter Fword for a cigarette ?

Though on my first motorbike you had to retard the engine to start it :-)

doughnut = set it back a little :-)

In our rain season ... hopefully soon to bless us ... we have had french drains installed and yes, they are basicaly a trench filled with gravel, sometimes with a grill put on top. Ours are at the edge of our front patio and the patio has obviously been done at a slight angle for the rain to go into said drain.

We always had a flooding across the front of our house so had this done and what a difference it has made ... no more floods.
