:help: Any ideas what I can do to rid myself of these horrible beetles. They seem to be very early this year. I have been going out and picking them off with tweezers, but there are just too many. My plants already look awful with holes all over them. All ideas gratefully received. :luv:

I'll have to get some Provado and give it a go Bob. Last year was bad enough for the little blighters, but it is really early to start with them and I've got lilies all round the garden so it's a full time job trying to pick them off.

:gnthb: Provado is the stuff, but you will have to spray more than once to keep on top of them. If you are in a bad area you must spray regularly or you will end up with the grubs in the bulbs & the lilies just keel over & die..:( They really are a very serious problem Clematis.. The RHS want to hear from people affected by it.. http://www.rhs.org.uk/Learning/Research/Projects/lily_beetle.htm

I tested the link it does work.

Thanks MF - just read the article and filled in the details - makes depressing reading. I've found 18 today just on one plant. Will get up the gardening shop first thing tomorrow to get Provado. Keep your fingers crossed I can get it under control.

Fingers crossed Clematis, they really are such horrid pests.. Not bright red for nothing...!!
Good luck, let us know how they are in a while after you have sprayed.. Once you have sprayed & got rid of them I would then give your lilies a good feed to help them get back on their feet again..

How strange:scratch: Last year mine were decimated but this year I've mashed only five....and my Lillies are almost untouched. Could it be that the harder frosts have whacked them here or they're running scared of me?:D

I have a lot of lilies in pots and even more straight into the ground. Whilst I was weeding earlier in the year I even found the beetles in the earth - nowhere near the lilies. I was inundated with vine weevil a few years back - and now these lily beetles seem to be the new pest on the block!! I'll let you know how I get on with spraying and feeding. If they are scared of you Pal can you come and spend a few days in my garden please :thmb:

Put a plastic sheet or newspaper on the ground around the plants and gently shake the stems... the beetles jump off when disturbed... and they are easier to pick up and destroy!

...........but pick off any ot those nasty slimey grubs.... tweezers perhaps!

I have the dreaded lily beetle [those red things that look like bloodsuckers) they can strip a plant bare. Grrr... I knock them off. I don't like to spray unless I really have to.

I saw a beetle on my water butt and took a picture so I could identify it but it looks like it's the lily beetle cause it's decimated them

    This is the beetle:

    And these are my lilies:

Is it game over for the Lilies or can I save them? I have sprayed them but should I repot them?

    Hi LMRR
Oh dear they have been got at!
Well just give them a chance you never know.

I did put mine in the garden [my sons girlfriend bought them for me] and they look good but they too have the dreaded beetle. They have black "mess" on them near the stem base and the beetle looks covered in mess too. Not a pretty sight

I dont think that is a lilly beetle as the LB is all red. Also it doen't look like lily beetle damage, more like rabbit damage

You got there before me Has Bean. LMRR lily beetles are all red - they look just like ladybirds, but without any spots. I'll try to get a photo.
