 Has anybody got any advice as how to eradicate leaf miners in the greenhouse.... My friend has just contacted me about his greenhouse. He thinks he has "Tomatoe Leaf Miners" overwintering in his green house & they are now attacking healthy pot plants of all kinds in there. I have not experienced this & cannot find anything much as to what to do by Googling either... Any advice would be really welcome as at the moment we are thinking it might be a chuck the lot, sterilize & start again job....... All help gratefully received...

If you have to go a chemical route, Malathion. Will also get rid of head lice. Don't spray if you are pregnant

i find bug gun very good on roots,
essentially you ll need to remove all plants and soil and sterilise the greenhouse, i d also unpot all plants, spray with bug gun and re pot in fresh compost read instructions carefully on all pesticides and don t inhale or splash skin

then use the plants as "bait" and throw out infected ones, natural methods are good, but can t cope with massive plagues

[IMG] Thanks LG. I have just spoken to him. A very sad man at the moment. He has thrown out most of his plants. Saved the special ones & he is planning to empty the whole thing out strilize it & then leave it empty for a month on the advice from one of the links. I will definately tell him about the spraying idea of yours for the special ones he has left. He thinks it is because he didn't sterilize the greenhouse as usuall last year because of illness... :( Ho hum, all these things are sent to try us, & try us they do....!!!! :(

I've come across leaf miner, but its usually in the summer months, and then I usually just squash the insects while they are still in the leaf. I find they are specific to particular plants and dont really attack lots of different types of plants.
Any systemic spray should kill them, but are you sure its leaf miner.
    Is this a tropical greenhouse?
I've not steralized my greenhouse for years, but I've never reached the stage of throwing everthing away because of a pest. :(

[IMG] I'm not 100% convinced either about it being leaf miner, but he did just put the heating on in there & a friend just watered it occasionally all through the winter. He is usually correct in his diagnosis though. He has also found some grubs just under the soil in some of the pots as well. Could be the dreaded vine weevil I suppose. So after a few emails & calls to bug people, decided that as his health has now returned he would start again. He is going to treat some plants & put them in the conservatory for now, but feels that as the others are in such a bad way, they have to go. Plus he wants to make sure he rids the greenhouse of everything & scrub it out, Maybe a way of cleansing his soul as well at the same time?? I don't know... He sounded very chirpy & positive earlier about it. So we shall see. He grows all sorts of plants, just what he likes etc. Succulents, cacti, ferns. Is that your speciality Pete? He isn't serious enough I think. Still we shall see how he goes. ..

I think that we all can have a tendency to let things go a bit at times, I was just concerned that throwing virtually everything out and starting again seemed a bit drastic.
At the moment my greenhouse is kept at a pretty low temp. as really all the plants I have in there are just overwintering, I dont want them to grow. This seems to keep the pests dormant as well, apart from the odd greenfly that is, and they only appear if you have soft new growth.
I certainly dont grow plants as well as I used to, I lost some of the dedication that I used to have, plus I dont have the time so much now.

[IMG] Yes with you entirely there Pete. He has calmed down a bit now I think, & he's decided to keep a few more now.. Yes, the temp is a bit higher than you need for just overwintering as he has sevaral plants that like to be around the 50s-60s in the winter & he refuses to have them indoors in their dormant stage, as I said to him. Just keep it a bit more together now you are well & maybe take a 2nd look at what you have in there anyway & change what you grow. After a grumble, he is now going to see what else he would like to grow.. [IMG] Nice to be in a position to change direction now I think, for him anyway, so will be interested to see what he settles on. [IMG] In answer to your question, I usually manage to start each season with a nice tidy greenhouse but as it fills up I seem to lose my organisation after a while, & time usually becomes scarce when you need to be in there most. Swings & roundabouts, don't they say?? ;) :D
