Hi guys, I hope somebody can help me, my Lawn is in great condition but the ground is so bloody uneven it's dangerous, it's a struggle to mow its that bad. What I want to know is can I cover it in top soil to level it up and then seed it or lay turf on to the top soil? I am a total gardening beginner I don't really want to dig up the whole lawn as it would cost me a fortune in skips alone! I am a builder in Coventry so I can offer advice back on anything regarding building and maintenance. PLEASE HELP! We have a baby due in August so ain't would be ideal to have it sorted by then. :help: :help: :help:

Rich, if you can put a picture or two on for us it would help to work out what needs to be done. :)

What's the "average" difference in height between a hollow and a hump?

If its just a few inches you could cover with good top soil and then sow seed, the grass underneath would come through too (it may struggle where a lot of soil is added) and it will mix in with the newly sown grass too.

But that only works if you only need an inch or two, although more in a few areas would just mean that those areas were relying on the seed.

If its worse than that they the best way is to properly prepare the area and sow seed (bit late now) or turf it (problem if you have a hosepipe ban as you can only use a sprinkler [assuming your water company offers this exception] for first 28 days.

If its a relatively new new-build, and the ground under the lawn is full of bricks and other rubbish - that you builders are inclined to leave behind and bury with some topsoil :snork::snork::snork: - then that all needs to come out first otherwise the lawn will never be right.
