I have this very starnge plant growing near my rockery - it is growing upright, dead straight against the garden wall. It grows very very quickly - grows in height by approx 2 inches over night. 3 in total have sprung up near each other. The stem looks very much like some sort of bamboo - in fact it looks like a broom handle! I have attached photos and hope you can help!

    Hi Kay

I have a horrible feeling it could be Japanese knotweed. But I should wait for further opinions.

That sounds a more likely explanation, Chris, as the ends of the shoots don't look like knotweed.

What do the leaves look like?If you could put up a photo of the leaves then that might help with identification.

I have just Googled and found this and it does show the lower stems which look similar to what you have there. If it grows tall quickly then it could be the dreaded JK...

    Hi Kandy

My next door but one neighbour had a lovely, luxuriant patch of knotweed in her garden :help::help: which, thankfully seems to have been vanquished. At least for the time being. The stems are very much like bamboo but at the top you get a tuft of heart-shaped leaves which seem to be different from what Kay has posted, even before they've unfurled. But it is a little difficult to judge from the photo.

:dh:Hi Kay, I am so sorry to say this but it does look like Clarlou is right... It does look suspiciously like it... Have a look here.. Not good news I am afraid.. Have a good Google on it.. Here is a good link to start you off.. http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.completeweedcontrol.co.uk/images/japanese_knotweed4.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.completeweedcontrol.co.uk/html/knotweed_identification.html&usg=__iOj1eP7yZ6Bez3TwvxxhVcNpjRQ=&h=270&w=270&sz=22&hl=en&start=11&sig2=ksf_nYMBgpN1iCVodEDOzA&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=Y9dQO1NG7xyOtM:&tbnh=113&tbnw=113&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djapanese%2Bknotweed%2Bearly%2Bstages%2Bid%2Bpictures%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26cr%3DcountryUK%257CcountryGB%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3D1KT%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26tbs%3Disch:1,ctr:countryUK%257CcountryGB%26prmd%3Di&ei=vL8ITPvMHty5sgbRsZClDg

Have you seen it growing near by or in a neighbours garden as they may not know what it is.... It is bad news though Kay if it is though so sorry... It can even affect one getting a mortguage it is viewed so badly as it is hard to irradicate...!! So if you agree get to the shops & by some Glyphosate weed killer & make a start, it is so invasive it is unbelievable.. Good Luck but do let us know yoiur thoughts on it..!! :thumb:

I've got a sneaking suspicion it might be Arundo donax.
    Or a very vigourous Bamboo

    Dont think its Knot weed

Does the plant do any leaves ?
I think that would settle the bamboo - knotwood argument.
    Personally I wouldn't want either.
If bamboo it might be slightly easier to get rid of. Knotwood -:help::(

It sounds like a lot of digging and swearing and sweating to me. Then a drop of Glyphosate.:flag::old:
