My computer terminated last week so now got new one. But when I log in it won't remember my password whereas before it did, my password has letters and numbers and is hard to remember and I'm fedup of typing it in all the time, how do you get it to remember it please.

Are you using Internet Explorer 7? If so, go to Tools and then Internet Options. Click on the Content tab, and then click on the Autocomplete Settings button about halfway down the page. Make sure the box to remember usernames and passwords is ticked. I always get it to prompt too. Firefox is similar, but I only have that at home so can't give you the instructions for that. Earlier IE programmes should do likewise.

I think there's a way of staying automatically logged in here too, when you log in, but I can't remember off the top of my head how to do that (either a tick box when you log in or a setting in your profile).

Hope that helps - mine is a mixture of letters and numbers too, so I know how frustrating it is.

Hi T O, I think, but am not sure, that if you don't bother to log out of GC you will remain permanently logged in. It doesn't seem to time out.

The point of having a password is for security purposes obviously, and having a computer that remembers your password is not a very secure thing to do ...anyone can click on your user name and have access to your files in the click of the mouse. This is why your computer won't offer to remember it, XP is far more security conscious than ME. However, you can password protect certain files in XP by compressing them ....see this link for how to do it ...
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306531&sd=tech

IMHO if you want to protect certain information, once the files are compressed, choose a password, obviously that YOU ALONE know, but nothing like your birth dates, or current car registration, perhaps a year that was particularly special to you ...example:- 1974 but written as 'nineteen74' .....not particularly long, easy to remember, and quick to type in. hth

I'm on XPb but I dont have to log in, cant tell you why but somewhere along the line I must have dissabled it, a long time ago.
Personally I think the whole password thing is daft, its like some kind of kids game.
I know you need passwords for serious stuff like banking etc. but just to acsess your own computer seems crazy to me.
That along with a few other things nearly put me off the whole idea of computers, its all complicated beyond belief.
I have a list of passwords which I have to write down in order to remember which apply where, it totally defeats the object and as for changing them regularly as is oftern suggested
Sorry cant help TO, but it is possible with XP.

Pete, it's only as complicated as people make it isn't it. I don't use a log in password, like you I could never see the point on a 'home computer' ...but if someone has files that are 'personal' the the compressing system above is a good idea. I don't use that either :D I have my own, very simple, method of remembering any passwords that ARE necessary, but they are secret !!! [IMG]

TO ... we have been talking at cross purposes .... !! your original post didn't make it clear (well not to me anyway  ) that you were talking about logging in on HERE (GC) !!! I took it that you mean logging into your NEW computer ..... [IMG] hence my long winded post with link re XP !!

I think the best thing to do is post your query on the HOW TO section on here and then one of the Mods will be able to fix it for you..... I've not really gone mad ..... :D have I

Yep had me going as well TO.
I'm no computer expert as you have probably already guessed, but I think it might have something to do with cookies, are you accepting them?

ML, yes I see your point, I suppose my problem is that I only see a computer as a kind of toy, I never put anything serious on it.
It all seems so shakey, having to back everything up suggests to me its a totally unreliable concept and not to be trusted with any serious or sensitive facts.
Even the government have trouble with them most of the time.

Best treated as the joke they are I think, until they actually manage to perfect them. :D
