I'm a real rookie gardener. I spent the weekend installing 70sqm of turf at my house. I first rotovated the existing lawn, removed the large clumps, raked it as best I could and flattened by jumping on a wooden board before laying the turf.

Unfortunately though I didn't do a very good job of flattening the soil before laying it and it's now quite lumpy.

What should I do? I was hoping that I might be able to give it 2 or 3 weeks then hire one of those compressor plates you see road workers using, but I suspect this might be a bit drastic.

Any help would be very warmly welcomed.

    Thanks and best wishes,
    George

If it were me (I'm not an expert) I'd wait until the new turf has bedded with the old turf, so leaving it for a few weeks, then I'd carefully cut out the area which is lumpy- then I'd even out what's under it (so, the soil) and then put back the piece I had cut out!

Not sure if this is the best or easiest way to do it, so I'd probably wait for someone else to reply!

thank you for the reply. I think that there may be too many lumps for that though unfortunately.

If it were me, I would take the turves back up and prepare the ground properly. Don`t go over the ground once with the rotovator, keep going until you get the soil to a fine tilth. Then spend an hour or so raking it all level, removing any weeds. Then using a water filled roller, roll the surface so it`s quite firm. Gently level again with the rake and lay your turf.
