Hi folks. I have 2 roses that I'd like help with. The first pic is of rose 'Crown Princess Margareta'. It's been in it's pot for a few months until I planted it today. There are quite a lot of holes in the leaves but I assume no real damage has been done ? Also, what's the score regarding pruning ? The second pic shows a rose I know nothing about. It's been in it's pot for years and pretty much neglected. Any advice on this one ?

First give it a spray with (spray bottle) of a mixture of water and a tablespoon of lemon joy, that will start the killing of some bugs. Next you get the powder white stuff, starts with a "S", forgot name right now.
Then lightly powder it when there will be a dry spell with no rain. As far as pruning, again, I would let it be do to the stress its been under already, lets let it get a little happier first. I always prune in the fall my roses, but mine are happy and not neglected.

    Hi Freddy,

Something is scoffing those roses chum, I sprayed water with a tspn of washing up liquid and a load of caterpillars came off mine-they have decimated my willow leaves aswell the swines, so have a bash at that (if lemon joy is washing up liquid forgive me maybe it`s an American brand so not sure).

Are you an organic gardener? Because if not an insecticide is your best bet-washing up liquid has a nasty habit of washing off and and when the bubbles burst and it is dry it sort of spoils the look of the foliage.

Hi folks. Bear in mind, there are TWO roses shown. As for the one with the holes, I can't say there's anything visible showing, in fact, it's been like that for some time. Cheers...freddy.

Yes, Claire, Lemon Joy is a washing up liquid dish soap, it is recommended by gardeners here alot as a first defense to start killing the little bugs and won't hurt the plant. It is a clear yellow liquid, smell like lemons, (dah). I would not worry in the beginning and dry to spoil the look of the foliage, first and fore most lets kill the little bugs and make the plant happy, you can always clear water spray it off later.
Besides the dry residue of the soap will deter new bugs from eating.

Hi Freddy prune the first Rose back now by a third its not to early and then another third in March,no point in spraying,The one in the Pot I would Cut that back now (THE LONG STEM)To about 6 to 12 inches (It will need all its strength over the Winter) and then repot it,using John Innes No3 80% + 20% Multi compost and some gravel Ect for drainage in the bottom and If possible try and raise the pot off the ground a few Inches,Just my own personal view Freddy ,Good luck:)

Hi WOO. 6ft x 6ft ! I didn't realise. Thanks for telling me. Regarding the one in the pot (2nd pic), I should have mentioned that the plan was to plant it out, but I thought I'd get advice first. Are you saying that I CAN plant it out now or should I wait ? Cheers...freddy.

Hi again. I've decided to put Crown Princess Margareta up against a trellis as shown in pic 1. In pic 2, a bloom from same. WOO, you reckon it'll be ok up against that trellis ? On the label, it says that it can be used as a short climber. Cheers...freddy.[IMG][IMG]
