When we were up in the mountains yesterday, we found this lovely shrub. It was about eight foot tall, I guess, and it was just heaving with these flowers. The clusters hang down.

    Any ideas, please?

I had thought that myself, BM, however these flowers are in a ball three inches across and you can see when they open they curl back on themselves.

There appears to be no smell, but that is difficult at the moment as t'other half has just baked a caraway seed loaf! :D :D

LoL remind me very much of Iochromas but these are australian plants related to brugmansias and plants I would give my eye teeth for I don't think you would find them wild even in portugal.

Morning, walnut. It does resemble Lochroma. There's very limited info on this, isn't there, and even fewer pictures! I always find Dave's Garden fairly useless on detail. I'll keep looking later today.

It appears they are from South America. However, both Australian and South American plants do well here in Algarve ... certainly not from the Alentejo (next province up) upwards.

I have four pieces I am trying to root. If successful, I'd be happy to send you one.

Flowers are like it, but the leaves? In the pics on the link, they're whiter and hairier..... It's a rather nice plant - mental note - keep sitting on purse..... :D

Hi, Dendro. I agree with you on the leaves. Also my flowers are in a complete ball.

Need I ask if you want one should I be able to root them? I know where the shrub is too! :D

You could be right, windy. In fact I'm sure you are, you clever gal!

You usually see them here white ... Lady of the Night / Nighted-Scented Jessamine. They are a stragglier shrub. I had one but gave it away as I'm not keen on white flowers ... too many white walls!

I fancied the red one and I think I've got it.

    Thank you!

Thought so, my Scottish thistle ... if it doesn't root, I'll be quickly up to that shrub in a week or two. I think I'm convinced now it's that.

Walnut .. you may not be interested now .. [IMG]
