I sowed the 5 caesalpinia gilliesii that arrived from Chilterns' about a week ago, and they have all come up, looking very comical all wearing their little seed case hats! What do I do next? have they time to flower?

The seed coats will fall off soon and if sown in one pot they will need to be transplanted carefully into 9cm pots when about 4ins high. They normally flower in the 2nd/3rd year and if pollenated will produce seed pods, mine do. The pic in april's comp was from an "own seed" plant" 2 years old but spent the winter in a cold poly tunnel but budded up three weeks after moving into a heated glasshous, flowering much earlier than they would normally. I have only grown them in pots not in the ground (lack of space).
Pete2255 has grown them outside and may give more info. [IMG]

Liz, as Strongy says I've grown them outside for a while now and they are pretty hardy.
Mine took longer to flower than strongy's about four or five years I think.
Dont prune, seems to be the best way of getting flowers, mines just starting into growth now, with a few buds developing.
If you do plant any outside I'd wait till next spring and find the hottest wall you can to plant against, I dont think it will flower in the UK as a free standing plant, which is a pity as I saw one in California some years ago and it was amazing, wish I'd got a picture of it.

Thanks both. Another nice thing to wait for! Their hats have all fallen off except for one, now they look like the laughing martians in the'For Mash get Smash' advert, big gaping grins where the round seed leaves are opening.

I would advise pinching out when about 12ins high as they make a more attractive shrub when branched, you may need to do this again to increase the branching but as Pete says when more mature and of flowering size they are better left alone. [IMG]

They are now all in pots and looking well. As you have them outside pete, does that mean they don't need heat at this time of year, or should I keep them in greenhouse until bigger?
    They now have frondy tops.
