    Sycamore Tree

    Help!
Our new garden has a large lawn area and there is a sycamore tree at
the bottom of the garden. The property has been empty for several months and so
the garden has been unattended with the result that literally hundreds of sycamore
seeds have sprouted in the lawn and are now about 5" or 6" high.

If we mow the lawn will it kill all these seedlings (says she hopefully) or do we have
to pick them out one at a time?
If we leave them we will have a forest of sycamore trees :dh:

    Any suggestions please?

Thanks Pete - I do hope so.

It will be several hours of back breaking work if not.

I will have to take a photo before we cut them :D

    moving a sycamore?

As I need some advice about a Sycamore, I thought I'd just tag it onto this thread!

Just noticed a young tree, about 4 feet tall and wondered what would be the best time to dig it up and stick it in a large pot. I don't want it growing in the ground and aging parent wants to keep the thing!

Thanks for watching and any advice given.

The best time for digging up trees/shrubs is when they are dormant in late autumn. However sycamore are very tough and you will probably get away with digging it up and putting it in a container now. You will have to give it plenty of water over the summer.

Can't imagine why your parent would want to keep it though, they aren't the nicest of trees in my opinion. I'd 'accidentally' forget to water it if it was me.

Jjordie, I`m afraid I disagree with Pete, mowing sycamore seedlings will not kill them, it will just hold the the top growth back while the root system expands. Rip them out, now, and be done with. Until next year that is.:gaagh::gaagh::gaagh::dbgrtmb:

I agree with pete on this one.
In my experience, cutting off Sycamore seedlings with a mower is sufficient to kill them.
Once they get beyond the seedling stage however, it's a different story. cut them off at ground level and they simply grow back again.
From your description of their size jjordie, I'd say the mower should do the trick.
