Hi everyone, I am a newbie to garden. My back garden is overlooked and I'm looking to plant a row of 3 or 4 trees for privacy. I know nothing about trees at all. I have done a ton of Googling but got nowhere, that's why I'm now here [IMG]

So below is my best case scenario and I would love if you knowledgeable people could recommend some trees that would work for me ... please [IMG]

    1) Need to be evergreen (for year round privacy)
    2) As colourful as possible (deep reds, purples etc)
    3) No conifers or palm trees
    4) Would need to grow to at least 13 foot with leaves also below the height of the 6 foot fence.

Am I asking too much [IMG]

Any help will be fantastic. If its relevant, I'm in Kent in the UK.

    Thank you all
    Ezzo

Hello Ezzo, welcome to GC. Whatever you plant, bear in mind that they'll be competing with one another for a long time, so good soil prep will pay off. Have you had a look at Arbutus unedo Rubra? Fantastic evergreen with interest all year round, either pink flowers or red fruit. Not as colourful but a fast grower and pretty leaves is Eucalyptus gunnii. Some of the Ceanothus can reach small-tree proportions when they're happy. C. arboreus 'Trewithen Blue' gets tall and flowers twice a year.

Photinia red robin nearly gets as tall as you require and keeps its leaves year round with a nice red colour to the leaves at times. If you need something taller Holly might also be an option and gets nice red berries in winter and is supposed to provide good shelter for wildlife.

All of the above :blue thumb: - but...

you need to think hard about growing it to 13ft as you may fall foul of the High Hedge Act. Some info with the legal gobbledegook taken out

        Hedges: nuisance and overgrown

You seem to have a nice garden there that you can turn into a lovely place. I'm a bit puzzled about your 'overlooked' comment. I presume you mean that you want to hide the roofs of the houses at the back but there doesn't seem to be any windows in the buildings that would enable them to look into your garden.

Also, if you grow something to a height of 13ft it may cause a lot of shade by the fence (depending on which direction the fence faces) and make it difficult for other plants to grow at the end of the garden. :noidea:

If the fence is to the north of your garden then you won't have any trouble with shade - but your neighbour might and would be entitled to object - but only when it gets too high. :)
