For the past two weeks my ripened tomatoes have been disapearing. I thought of the neighbours, blamed the wife, even thought about the dogs. One thing is certain this is not a two legged thief. Yesterday I put cotton across the doors to both greenhouses, so even though I knew it was there, I couldn't get in without breaking the cotton. and still acouple of ripe ones were gone. I have noticed that there seem to be quite a few green ones still on the vine have 'fallen' off.
There is no trace what so ever off the remains of red toms, they have simply been removed. Now there is no way I can leave the greenhouses shut all day while we're out.

I thought it may be a squirrel (they nicked all my walnuts off the tree last year), someone at my local said they had tomatoes taken by a magpie one year.

    Any other suggestions and remedies??

If you have squirrels they could well be the culprit.
They used to pick the flowers off my yellow roses - don't know why.

I suspect birds, they have stripped pretty much everything red in my garden. The colour attracts them.

Found the cause, a bloody rat!!! Saw it coming down the tomato plant having just nipped through the vine causing it to fall off.

    I'm nor surprized , Labrador.
It had to be something with little "hands" to pick the fruit off.
If you have one rat, you will have more. The blighters will be everywhere.

Ah ... it takes me back to a romantic holiday break on a tiny Greek island. We thought it would be so peaceful to be somewhere which didn't have any cars. We reckoned without the guy next door blowing the rats on his grapevines to bits each dawn ....
