Hi all I wonder if I could ask for your expertise :)

I recently purchased a Panasonic Leica DG Macro Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH Mega O.I.S lens. It only arrived at the weekend however.

    1. When I tilt the lens there seems to be a clicking noise and I'm not sure if this is normal? This clicking/movement happens if the lens is attached to the camera or not.

    2. When I put the camera into playback to view photo's taken the motor in the lens still seems to be running... is this normal?

Thank you for your feedback :)

When I buy something and it starts to rattle or click, I automatically think I'be broken it! If the lens still seems to be running, perhaps there's no harm done? I'm by no mean and expert in these things but hopefully one of our GC photographers will be along soon to offer some advice. :)

Hi @Fern4 thank you for your message. I know for sure that I didn't brake it as I only had it in my hand for about 5 minutes :heehee: when I heard something that shouldn't be there. Once I tried it on the camera it proved there must have been a problem as the motor should (I think) not run when you are in photo viewing.

After posting my message I decided to contact the company and the lens has been returned so I'm now just waiting for a replacement.:)

This seems to be well documented if you do a google on it. I don't suppose you tried it without the image stabilizer on?

            Oh my goodness!!

Just a word to the wise, when you open the package & before it is powered up on your camera, there is a scary "rattle" - this is actually documented in reviews and it stops as soon as power is on (it's the OIS anti shake). It is very unnerving for such an expensive piece of kit with a Leica signature... but heh, panic over, it's a beauty to use !

Thanks NorthantsGeezer, If only I had of seen this review before purchase I would have then realised that it was normal, the little rattle actually stays even when powered up but not so noticeable.

What I don't understand though, is why the motors within the lens still run when you are in viewing mode. My thought would be that it would drain the battery really quickly.

I did have a little go with it before I sent it back and 'wow' it does what it says it does :)

A big thank you :love30: for sending the link, had I not read this I may have had the same thoughts :phew:

To be honest as the lens is not with me anymore its difficult to answer your question. When you ask this are you referring to the 'rattle' or the motor running on?

I am not familiar with micro four thirds, but I know that image stabilisers can make a noise when in operation. Maybe it is constantly working. If you switch it off on the side of the lens, I would expect to hear some change to some degree at least. I use Canon L series lenses, and one of those made a noise during operation, and for a second or two afterwards, but it would then be silent if I recall correctly (I sold that one :) ) but it was fully functional, and normal.
See how you get on with the new one

                    That's good to know....

I feel awful now  I did read up on a lot of reviews but most of them were about what it can do, so obviously to me it was a good choice. Just wish those reviews mentioned the 'rattle' and possible the motor running on.

Well fingers crossed and my new one will arrive soon, at least I am more knowledgeable now.... thank you..... I have to confess I am still very much an amateur when it comes to camera's and photography.... but we all have to start at the beginning and make our mistakes.

I'm just reading the rest of the reviews on the link you sent me.... interesting read ups :)

I just now need to learn how to use it :heehee:

                      Don't worry, I am still learning everytime I do a shoot :)
I read some other forums saying great lens, but I wish it didn't rattle.
I am sure that you will soon be taking great images with it. They are very impressive from what I have seen on photography forums.
