Brought this Acer about ten years ago, its been grafted onto a root stock and is
only just over 3 foot high, think these may also be known as a Umbrella Maple / Acer

I want to buy one for my Son's garden and after some research, I think it might
be called Acer Palmatum Dissectum Garnet but not 100% sure if I have the
correct acer? What do you guys think?

Its a lovely looking tree and even now some of the leaves are changing colour
into more of a blood red colour (see last photo)

..To id Acer palmatum dissectum to a named cultivar is extremely hard.
From pics almost impossible to be 100% accurate.

Yes, it could be Garnet but maybe it is not!

Garnet is a superb one to give as a gift as it is slow, beautifully weeping and a good colour.
Another I would recommend is Inaba shidare.
    And Crimson Queen.
Red filigree lace is a beauty but you need a specialist Acer grower to find that one.

With these 3, the larger the Acer, the bigger the price, as they are slow to grow. ...as you have found.
You can pay £200.00 for a really big one on a tall leg.
While £50.00 should buy a good one.
Too short and they weep on the ground.
Check that the graft is sound before buying.
Avoid ones that are covered in moss as they will have been in the same pot a long time and will be root bound.

Thanks for the very good advice, its a great looking tree and I keep worrying about coming out in the morning and finding that it's been stolen from our front garden!
