I am ok with mechanical things and DIY but electronics defeat me as I have no knowledge on the subject.
Looking for someone to possibly guide me in trying to repair a PC monitor, tools at hand are multi meter and a soldering iron.

    Hi,

Am into simple electronics but think I would be a bit dubious about trying to repair a PC monitor, assuming its the modern lcd type ?

They are often so integrated and use specialist parts it leaves little scope for diy repair, though its always worth checking the very obvious things like fuses and broken connectors / wires.

For more detailed help look at these two good forums, one more local based and one worldwide, the latter also has a mass of very interesting ytubes from the site owner, Davy Jones.

Thanks for the links ricky, just for information this is the `history`:

I have replaced this monitor with a new one but have nothing to lose in trying to repair it. The initial problem was a dodgy mains power connection, I think a dry joint so I have resoldered that, however after reassembling the monitor when it boots up the small windows that are used to adjust brightness/contrast etc just keep flashing .

I have attached a link to a video clip which shows the problem better than I can explain.

I do believe this issue was of my own doing and I have possibly damaged or not seated something properly when assembling it as this was not an issue prior to repairing the power connection.

Before I rip it apart again any useful guidance would be helpful, my knowledge of electronics is pretty much zero, more a case of now being retired I have the time to look at items I would normally have binned.

      Hi @Scudo

I think you have one of two possible problems there - either the ribbon connector from the board that has the switches on it has been partly tugged out of its socket when you were working on it, or the switches themselves have become compressed during reassembly (if you have overtightened the screws for example).

The first thing I would do is to whip the back off it and take a look around the area where the control buttons are - there is likely to be a small circuit board there, just make sure it is seated properly and then follow the connector back to the main board and check that it is properly connected. Then, I would see if it works with the back off (being extra careful to stay away from the hot side of course)

If you get stuck, post pics of what you are seeing on this thread, and we can guide you through as much as possible. I am around all day today, and apart from some housework I am kicking my heels, so am on hand if you need to holler.

I opening it up and undone and then redone the connections at the main board and at the `button` panel, I have just loosely rebuilt it and it appears to have eliminated the problem.
So next stage is to reassemble properly and then recheck it.
It looks as if it was the connections that have been at fault.

Happy days :) It didn't look to be all that sinister a fault, so I would say you have fixed it.

Just a mention , if you are interested in electronics and want to do some more there a so many ways to learn from OU / college courses to web tutorials etc etc.

One way would be to follow a similar method to the school kids and do a combination of basic programming with electronic hardware using a microprocessor ( scary, not )

For just £6 you can start off with an Arduino Uno clone board or as the pic shows you can buy it with lots of hardware for not that much more. ( lots of different kits out there)

Certainly keeps the old grey matter working and the hours rolling by!

I once attended a COMPTIA course at the local college and I can say that what gives you most of the expertise is: disassembling and reassembling again and again and learning the name of the parts as you are working with them.
