Hi - I have a lovely pear tree in the garden but each year it seems to get a disease that makes the leaves go partially or even fully black or have an orange coloured dot on them. Photos below - can anyone tell me what kind of disease it is and how to prevent or cure it ??

ps: it doesn't seem to affect the pears themselves - no sign of anything burrowing into them.

It is indeed Pear rust. Somewhere near you must be a Juniper. The rust starts on them and then transfers to Pear trees.

Thanks for your help - I've now looked pear rust up and, indeed, it looks like my tree has Pear Rust (even though the leaves don't seem to have the scabby growths on the underside, just the bright orange spots !)

Can you tell me when is the best time to spray the tree with an anti-fungal solution - when the leaves have all fallen off and spray the branches etc or early spring before the buds start to form??

        Hi

I would do both now (before the leaves get blown around the garden) and in the spring but you must clear away all the old leaves and burn them dont add to your compost bin ... in the spring before the leaves appear add a thick mulch under the tree , help keep the area clean ... its been a stressful year for trees with the drought and heat

Once again, thank you all for helping. It definitely is 100% Pear Rust as I just checked underneath the leaves and they DO have the wart-like growths under there.

        Cheers.
