Help with My Alocasia Losing Leaves

Hey everyone, I bought an Alocasia a few weeks ago, and it’s already losing leaves at an alarming rate. I started with 8 or 9 leaves, but now I’m down to 5, and one is turning yellow. Here’s what I’ve noticed:

• The soil is dry and seems compacted, with some roots visible.
  
  
• The soil is hard to puncture, but I'm not sure if that’s because of root growth or the soil itself.
  
  
• At the edge of the pot, the soil is pulling away, and the top inch is dry.
  
  
• It’s sitting on a pebble tray with water, and I’ve used a basic anti-disease spray on the leaves twice.
  
  
• Not sure if it helps but I'm based in the UK so the weather isn't exactly sunny, could it just be going dormant? That's what the lady I bought it from suggested but there is still one new leaf that has yet to unfurl.
  

I’m concerned the soil might be an issue, but I’m not sure what to do next. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

 

Have you got it indoors?
It would probably be going dormant now, I agree.

If its fairly large I'd start drying it off and put it in a cool but frost free place to overwinter.
