    Hi all,

We moved into our house last year (May 07) and found that we had a smal pond under a large Maple tree. The pond has no electricity supply, so no pump or filter, therefore the water looks dark and murky. It must be healthy because there are lots of frogs & tadpoles and the birds like a bath.

Are there any tips to keep the pond water clearer without the need for electricity?

We did have duckweed, I got rid of that. We now have blanket weed and that is a right pain - bring back the duckweed.

    Thanks, Nick

Sorry that I am not going to be much help:)

If you have wildlife the water must be healthy.

You could try more oxygenating plants but other than that I am out of ideas.

Believe it or not a pond is normally green.

its only since people spend lots of money on them that they want to see the fish etc that the UV etc was used for ponds.

Some people are lucky and have the right mix of plants and the water is clear.

I suggest you get a deck chair sit back and watch. Or late in the evening sit still so you can see the pond and see how may frogs you can see going for a "walk" it can be quite surprising how may you do see.

your type of pond is called a natural pond.

your pond could just look dark, because of the bottom sediment

how deep is the pond ?

wot you might wonna try to test clarety of the water is get a white stone. tye it on a length of string and lower it into the water . when you cant see the stone make a note on the string.
this will give you a marker for further reference to how clear the water is

As far as the blanket weed , get a stick and 'twirl 'it out.
    Better than chemicals.
It's a pain but you can keep on top of it.
It will clog up the pond if left.

a balanced pond is not green I had a wildlife pond no pump or filter it had oxygenating plants floating plants was full of newts frogs water fleas, ramshorn snails the water was gin clear on the other hand my Koi pond was a struggle to keep clear the excess nitrates produced by the fish fed the filamentous algae causing green water this problem was erradicated once I installed a u/v steriliser and filter.
