We recently installed A 2nd hand Rayburn Coal Glo Glass doored solid fuel fire to run central heating. It has been heaven (hot rooms and water)for the first 3 weeks; after only having a coal fire and no central heating.
The problem is it has suddenly become less efficient and when we open the door to stoke up with coal the smoke comes pouring out which never happened when we first started using it .
Does any one else have similar form of heating and know what may be causing these problems
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
    Thanks

Sounds like a flue problem, insuficent draw perhaps but only a guess.

I would have thought it would pay to get a chimmney sweep in or a heating engineer with experience of solid fuel. is the flue swept regularly?

:thumb: Hi Derwent, not familiar with that particular fire, but have had Rayburns before. Does it have a throat plate at the top of the fire where it goes to the chimney.?? It stops sparks & debri going up the chimney.. You may need to take it out & clean any collected ash off... What about any clinker at the back of the firebox..??? Or at the back where your ask pan goes... All these things if you have them, will choke the fire... HOpe that is of some help..!:thmb:

    Thanks for your help.
While I was asking for help yesterday, hubby was investigating and found part of a brick had dislodged up the chimney and blocked the base of the flue. With some harsh words and some persuation the obstruction came away and all is good again. - Now I have cleaned the sooty kitchen once more.

    Hello Derwent,
I am thinking of buying a second hand Rayburn Coal Glo and wondered how it has been going for you? Would you have any idea of how many radiators and what size room it would heat?
or anyone else that has experience of one?
    Thanks!

Ours used to do Hot water and seven radiators in a three bedroomed house
    Best we ever had
Then coke and coal got too dear, emptying the ashes, getting the coal in we changed to gas
Worst thing we ever did was lose the Rayburn.
You could burn paper and unwanted stuff safe from prying eyes searching bins for Data
Heat you will not get from any other source
AND the magic of watching a real fire, gas flares, the nice glow and the warmth

Too old and broke now to go back, but if I win the lottery that is whats getting put in

Even better than the AGA as you can watch the flames
