What about woodland and woodland edge plants?

Ferns, primrose, wild garlic, bluebells, some wild roses. There'll be loads more, but I'm not the most knowledgeable here:)

For perennials look at epimediums and ferns, there are various types of each that would do well in that situation.

Plant several of each to create an impact, rather than just dotting one here and there.

For shrubs, you could take your pick really, there are loads of choices to be had, wander around your garden centres for inspiration if you don't have any books - a good starters book is the Dr. Hessayon range of 'Expert' series - i cut my gardening teeth on them years ago, they're small paperbacks and really useful books to have in a collection.

Look for The Evergreen Expert or the Flowering Shrub Expert.
