Can anyone help me with this please?
Firstly, I have had houseplants attacked by little white things I thought were white fly, but going on the description they're not, cos they don't fly! OK, I can cope with losing a couple of aloes... but then I see my rock rose in the garden has suddenly turned yellow and the same white thigs are on that too! I sprayed with an organic insecticide. THEN... then I see my buddleia, which has loads of nice new leaves on after being cut back in spring, has lots of leaves which are brown and curling at the edges - what's happening? I was doing so well last year, boo hoo!! :-(

If the leaves feel skicky then you have an aphid problem of some sort. They excrete honeydew which is an ideal breeding medium for sooty mould. If so spray the plants with a weak solution of washing up liquid (about 1/2 the strenght you would use for washing a few non greasy dishes) and very gently massage the leaves while you are spraying. It will effectively 'drown' the aphids by stopping them breathing and it will also clean the honeydew off the leaves. Expect to do this weekly or more for bad infestations.

I have a small orange tree that gets a very tiny aphid that makes small cottony type balls on the underside of leaves. They don't apear to fly but washing will clear them and keeps the leaves healthy.

Re: the buddleia. I had early spring frost and cold wind damage on new growth which made the leaves go brown but it's fully recovered now. They aren't normally attacked by aphids although can get the odd leaf hopper on them.

Right, on closer inspection I discovered sooty deposits so I assume it is actually whitefly, so I chopped the rock rose right back (hope it grows back!) as the spray didnt seem to do owt...
Thanks Frogesque, the buddleia's recent sprouting seems to be fine so it's probably like you said [IMG]
